Engage With Communities of Uganda

For many of us we want to do more than simply visit a place. We want to immerse in the culture of that place, at least a little and often do more than that and really engage with it to give our time, head-space, skills and knowledge; to understand it and to actually hand something back that will benefit the communities who welcome it.

Giving something back is central to our ethos at Tambula (it was borne out of charity work that took us there). We have developed partnerships with a few core organisations focused on empowering women, children’s education and healthcare and can organise working stays, Duke of Edinburgh (and youth group) voluntary experience, work experience and short and longer term volunteering for those wishing to get right under the skin of life in Uganda and do something really positive.

Empowering Women

Working with Eve & Denis at our core partnership organisation, Ride 4 a Woman, we love to get willing people involved in building, teaching, health education, and family and home support out and about in the community of Buhoma. R4W supports over three hundred women in the area and we support them with business and marketing skills in order to help sustain the cause.

Educating Children

Working closely with Headteacher Elizabeth, we partner with Bwindi Plus Primary School to help support the education of their 305 children aged between two and fourteen years. Visitors can work with the children in the classroom, help in the office, support building projects, work in the school gardens, or make bricks ready for construction.

Healthcare Support

At Bwindi Community Hospital there are opportunities abound; supporting the doctors and nursing staff, working in the new nursing school, learning about the work of the different departments, supporting the women in the pregnant ladies waiting hostel, building projects and more. Recently one of our clients completed an incredible few days voluntary work ready for her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, highly esteemed in the UK.

Contributions & Donations

All of our partners very much welcome contributions of a host of items - from school materials, clothes, shoes, soap, sports equipment and a range of medical kit. Financial donations support microcredit for women in business, child sponsorships, new building projects, medical equipment and a lot more, helping alleviate the daily pressures of poverty and suffering from HIV or domestic violence.

 Talk To Our Uganda Expert

Our Managing Director Sharon Hedges developed a passion for Uganda when she began working for a women’s empowerment initiative deep in the heart of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Realising just how much more Uganda has to offer than its utterly beautiful Mountain Gorillas, Sharon now wants to share her love for the country and its people with others so that they too can enjoy their own unique journey in this incredible country.
